Power Acoustik PTID-8001N Review (PTID8001N)

The Power Acoustik PTID-8001N is a single DIN receiver with an oversized 8” monitor. The PTID-8001N is unique in its design, shedding what would otherwise be a bulky double DIN chassis. Instead, the receiver features a single DIN chassis that does not retract, but hangs down from its mount instead. Though the design requires a much more spacious installation clearance, the added advantage is its ability to fit in many vehicles lacking a double DIN installation slot.
Display
This unique single DIN receiver features a large 8" LCD touchscreen monitor. The display resolution is magnificent, especially with its 1440 x 220 total widescreen pixel resolution. The display is both clear and bright, but users would need plenty of clearance and unobstructed space under the mount. Though most car owners have the single DIN mounting slot, some vehicles have various angle mounting or air vents and console buttons that would prevent it from being installed properly.

Capabilities
The Power Acoustik PTID-8001N is one of a kind with its ability to receive most audio and video file formats such as standard DVDs to DivX, XviD, MP3, and even MP4. On top of that, it is capable of receiving any dockable iPods with an addition cable adapter. The interface allows a user to directly control and access the iPod with ease and familiarity, all of which are made easy with the touchscreen display.There is a front-panel USB and AV auxiliary inputs, which enables the unit to receive many external and portable audio/video media devices like portable DVD players, gaming consoles, flash drives, and MP3 players. Power Acoustik even included an SD Card adapter for the USB port so that users are able to access the increasingly popular SD Card flash media.

DUAL XDVD8183 Review (XDVD-8183)

A versatile and new way of watching movies in your car, the Dual XDVD8183. Imagine having the ability to play your favorite DVD movies in your vehicle without a ceiling-mount LCD monitor or a bulky double DIN DVD head unit. The XDVD8183 features a retractable 7" LCD monitor that is both touchscreen and wide 16:9 resolution.Display
The great thing about the XDVD8183 is its ability to retract the large 7" LCD monitor neatly and seamlessly into a standard single DIN chassis. This is advantageous for a few reasons. The first is its ability to be installed virtually in any vehicle with or without a double DIN installation space. The second advantage to having a retractable screen is for its own protection. While it tucks safely in the chassis, the screen is protected from any incidental bumps, scratches, or potential punctures. In addition, it protects the LCD screen from direct sunlight, which is a known cause for LCD damages. One last great advantage is its function as a passive theft-deterrent measure. If no one can see it, then no one will be attracted to it. When the screen is retracted, the receiver looks like a plain single DIN car stereo.

Built-in Bluetooth and iPod
For Californian drivers, having Bluetooth is probably one of the most important things to do since the law comes into effect July 1, 2008. Don't worry, the XDVD8183 will feature its own Bluetooth hands-free technology, enabling drivers to make phone calls and receive calls with just one button. The unit includes a built-in microphone and an on screen call status which displays the caller ID and the phone status.

Moreover, the unit features an iPod port that will allow any dockable iPods to be interfaced into the unit, giving users full access and control of the iPod through the onscreen display. The menus and controls mimic iPod controls, making usage much more familiar and easy.

The Dual XDVD8183 even includes a remotely-mountable auxiliary input unit so that plugging in all your external audio and video sources much easier and accessible, even for the rear seat passenger.

JVC KW-AVX810 Review (KWAVX810)

The brand new 2008-released JVC KW-AVX810 features technology unique only to the unit itself. It's feature packed and capable of playing all of your favorite movies, music, and even capable of displaying your photographs.

Detachable screen??
The JVC KW-AVX810 showcases a widescreen 7" LCD touchscreen display that is complete in depth and full in color. You won't have a problem watching your movies or your latest hiking pictures on this double DIN receiver. What's completely unique only to the KW-AVX810 is its ability to have the front panel (which includes the screen) to complete detach. There are a few advantages to this. The first is obviously theft deterrent-- applying the principle of "out of sight, out of mind." The second is protection from extreme temperatures, both hot and cold. The LCD screen is probably one of the most sensitive electronic components. The key to its longevity is your extreme care of it especially in the summer heat!High Fidelity Audio/Video
The KW-AVX810 is capable of playing today's popular media file formats, including standard DVD, DivX, JPEG, MPEG1, MPEG2, AAC, MP3, and WMA. The crucial factor in the KW-AVX810 is its high-fidelity audio and video digital to analog converters. Whereas most other receivers feature a 1-Bit or an 8-Bit converter, the JVC KW-AVX810 features a 24-Bit audio D/A converter and a 12-Bit video D/A converter. Users taking advantage of these features will feature much better audio and video playback. You could also use the KW-AVX810 as a home theater component in your vehicle with its ability to put out Dolby Digital surround sound. Last but not least, the KW-AVX810 features a detailed 7-band parametric equalizer, allowing users to adjust seven different frequencies to their liking. For the more novice users, the unit pairs the equalizer with simple 8 presets.

Proximity Sensor
Similar to the KD-AVX44 and KD-ADV49, the KW-AVX810 features a proximity sensor that detects an approaching hand. Upon detection, the menu will conveniently display. Upon idle or undetected approach, the unit will hide the menu and the graphical user interface unless a video or other media is being played.Expansion Options
This versatile double DIN DVD receiver features 5-volt outputs through front, rear, subwoofer, and also a center gold-plated RCA preamp connectors. Looking for HD or Satellite Radio capabilities? Look no further! With additional accessories, the unit is capable of receiving SIRIUS, XM, and also HD Radio signals. The KW-AVX810 also could interface with iPod/iPod Video as well as Bluetooth-capable devices with ease and integration that is unmatched by any other product.

There are of course auxiliary RCA audio and video inputs, which typically comes standard with most receivers. However, the KW-AVX810 also has an SD Card reader and a USB port, allowing user access to portable media devices or storage containing their favorite media files.

Overall

Blaupunkt Key West MP38 Review

The Blaupunkt Key West MP38 is a brand new 2008 released car stereo receiver with full Bluetooth and iPod support. The unit is the upgrade to Blaupunkt's previous Key West release, the Key West MP36. The Key West MP38 features a highly improved front panel design that is both attractive and modern in appearance. The dot matrix display features back-lighting that could be easily adjusted to any one of 4096 colors of choice, easily adaptable to match your car's interior or your favorite color.

This attractive single DIN head unit is capable of MP3 and WMA playback through regular CDs. However, the Blaupunkt MP38 could also receive USB sources with additional accessories. The MP38 has several audio enhancements to make audio playback experience the best it could ever be with the stereo system. It has a 3-band parametric equalizer that will allow users to adjust low, mid, and high frequencies and even a bass-boost feature. If you are looking to expand your car audio system into more complex setups, the receiver features two pairs of RCA preamp outputs. In addition, with optional accessories, the Blaupunkt MP38 is capable of receiving iPod audio with full access and control through the units own controls. The MP38 is also capable of operating Bluetooth wireless capable phones with optional accessories.

The Blaupunkt Key West MP38 is an attractive single DIN receiver with Bluetooth and iPod capabilities. The price isn't bad either, set at under $170. However, the need to have additional accessories may create more complex installation and additional expenses.

Clarion VRX785BT Review (VRX-785BT)

Clarion released a single-DIN multimedia receiver with a retractable 7" LCD touchscreen monitor that is also navigation ready. This top-tier product showcases one of the most attractive front-panel design with reliability and performance that is virtually second to none.The Clarion VRX785BT features a high-contrast LCD display that is perfectly beyond just "suitable" for watching movies, in fact, it's superb. The screen is capable of displaying your favorite DVDs and DivX file formats. It will also display other media information that is currently playing such as AAC, MP3, and WMA tags that contains artist, title, and album information. The unit will process all digital media files with its built-in 24-Bit D/A converter that could be classified as premium quality digital to analog processor, ensuring near loss-less audio and video quality.In addition, the Clarion VRX785BT has excellent audio adjustment controls featuring bass and subwoofer level adjustments along with a 3-band equalizer. It also has high pass filters and dual zone outputs allowing rear seat passengers to listen to something else that is playing in the front seat listening area. You could also expand the unit through its front, rear, and subwoofer channels RCA preamp outputs.

The VRX785BT does have built-in Bluetooth capabilities, eliminating the need for additional accessories and modules to conduct hands-free cellular phone operation. If you have XM Radio subscription, the VRX785BT could receive XM Radio signal with additional accessories. Control and operation of Satellite Radio is done from the VRX785BT's LCD screen. In addition, the Clarion VRX785BT features a USB port that is capable of receiving direct connection of any current dockable iPod models, effectively supporting playback and controls of the iPod. The additional rear RCA audio and video inputs are also capable of receiving additional source units such as remote mounted DVD players or even video game systems.To top it all off, the already incredible Clarion VRX785BT is fully compatible with Clarion's add-on navigation module. Upon installation of the NAX980HD, the VRX785BT becomes a single DIN in-dash GPS navigation unit. It will then feature over 10 million points of interest available as well as a built-in gyro sensor, turn-by-turn voice command in three languages, a 12-channel GPS receiver, and an additional front USB port for map or firmware updates. Moreover, the navigation unit adds to the VRX785BT an excellent graphical user interface menus with multiple navigation viewing angle.It is to no surprise that the Clarion VRX785BT could be considered one of the best single DIN receiver available. It has plenty of features for users to be satisfied with for years to come and has the ability for it to be converted into a navigation device. Clarion stands for great quality, and with that great quality, they've packaged great features into the very excellent Clarion VRX785BT.

Jensen VM9212N Review (VM-9212)

The Jensen VM family of single DIN in dash multimedia receiver are all specialized in various needs of the consumer. The Jensen VM9212N is specially designed to satisfy the need for navigation functionality in the vehicle without spending an astronomical amount of money in the attempt to do so. With the VM9212N, consumers are able to purchase an additional navigation module that will allow the unit to operate as a navigation receiver-- all of which will cost less than $600.The Jensen VM9212N is a single DIN receiver with a motorized flip-out / retractable 7" LCD touchscreen monitor. It features a nice and easy-to-use graphical user interface with attractive on-screen button designs. It truly gives the unit a more futuristic and high-tech look. It definitely saves a lot space since it is only a single DIN unit, capable of being mounted in more vehicles than double DIN units. The retractable mechanical function also serves as a passive security system, keeping the nice 7" screen out of sight and out of mind of curious onlookers.It is fully capable of playing DVDs, CDs, VCDs, with AVI, MPEG1, MPEG2, JPEG, MP3, and WMA file formats. All of these media formats are fully supported and covers almost every audio and video formats out there for you to use. If you're looking to use an iPod with the unit, they have you covered with an included audio and video to 3.5mm AV adapter, giving you full playback from iPod (note: does not allow for control through the VM9212 unit itself)

Of course, we wouldn't feature just an average receiver. The VM9212 has the capability to function as a GPS navigation unit with the additional purchase of the NAV101 navigation expansion module. The combined total of the two units will set consumers to well under $650, a price that is very rare for an in-dash navigation unit. With the NAV101 module, the VM9212 will be able to receive up to 20-channels of GPS signal, thus allowing it to lock on to 20 individual orbital global positioning satellites-- giving maximum coverage and accuracy to the navigation feature. In addition, the module has 2 million POIs (points of interest) built-in with an upgradeable database through the SD Card reader.

If you are looking for an interactive in-dash multimedia player with navigation capabilities, you will save a lot of money with the purchase of the VM9212N and the NAV101 module. Besides the benefit of the low cost, the unit is fully capable of delivering all of your favorite audio and video medias with the best experience you'll ever have.

Absolute USA DD858 Review (DD-858)

The Absolute DD858 is a very, very affordable double DIN receiver that features both audio and video playback in almost any format. Where most other brands is set at around $450 and up for a basic double DIN audio/video receiver, the DD-858 is set very cheap at $299, while featuring some of the most coveted functions such as iPod playback, audio/video support, TV tuner, and even backup camera input!The double DIN head unit features a large 7" LCD touchscreen monitor that is capable of displaying video playback from DVD, DVD±R/RW, VCD, SVCD, DivX, JPG, and AVI media formats. This pretty much covers most of what everybody use today, so your favorite movie or music video won't be left out-- a feature rarely supported by major brand units like Pioneer or Kenwood. In addition, the DD858 is capable of playing your favorite MP3s as well as WMA. The unit will display song information the screen such as artist, song title, and album information for each tagged music file. Moreover, there will be able to put out any audio signal into a surround sound 5.1 channel output.There is also support in the Absolute DD858 for iPod charging and playback. So for all of you iPod owners out there (we know there are tons), the Absolute DD-858 supports your standard iPod or iPod video! There is also support for SD Cards as well as portable media storage through its integrated SD Card reader and a mini USB port.

One last critical feature of the Absolute DD-858 is its built-in TV tuner which also includes a TV antenna with each purchase. Now you can watch your favorite shows on the road (while parked of course), from channels 2-95 (if receivable).

The double DIN DD858 is truly a versatile in-dash media center, capable of delivering audio and video entertainment to the consumer at a minimal price. Along with its iPod support, SD Card reader, and mini USB port, the DD858 will satisfy the consumer's need for an AV unit.

Clarion MAX385VD Review (MAX 385VD)

The Clarion MAX385VD is a double DIN receiver capable of diverse multimedia playback as well as a variety of expandability options available for the unit. The Clarion MAX385VD features a 6.5" LCD touchscreen that is capable of displaying DVD movies and of course any media information being played.
The 6.5" screen is a nice fit for this unit, placed right at the center of the unit instead of off-center application made by other companies like Kenwood and Pioneer. However, the CD/DVD slot-in is located just behind the screen itself; forcing users to always flip open the screen before inserting the disc. The front panel design is relatively simple, yet still possesses plenty of high-tech feel to it. The buttons are made of silver-painted plastic pieces with a metallic/chrome finish rotary dial.
This double DIN head unit is also capable of receiving your downloaded MP3 and WMA files through CD or DVD mediums. It will display currently playing artists, songs, and albums on the screen and users could easily browse through media folders. Users will also notice a much better sound quality in the MAX385VD than most other in dash receivers, primarily due to its high 24-Bit D/A converter, which converts digital media signals to signals that could be produced by your speakers. The higher the bit-rate, the more likely users will experience a higher sound quality (though it could still depend on the quality of your downloaded digital music.)

The Clarion MAX385VD features a Sirius Satellite Radio add-on option, allowing consumers to enjoy high quality, specialized programming satellite radio anywhere they travel. Clarion also realized that many consumers out there are likely to own an iPod. To this thought, Clarion has developed its own iPod adapter, allowing for iPod playback and controls from the in-dash controls. If you have more components and want to display them on the screen, there are even additional RCA audio/video inputs for external devices such as cameras, video game consoles, and any other portable audio video sources you may have.

Priced at a competitive low cost, the double DIN Clarion MAX 385VD receiver will be attracting a lot of attention sitting on only a $430 price tag. If you’re looking basic multimedia playback with Satellite Radio and iPod expandability options, then the Clarion MAX385VD is an excellent choice that combines both versatility and dependability.

Alpine IVA-W505 Review, Part III: Navigation and Summary

Navigation Ready
Along with the the plethora of features already highlighted on the previous posts, the Alpine IVA-W505 also features the ability to dock the Alpine PMD-B200 Black Bird II portable GPS navigation device. The front screen flips down and the GPS navigation unit is stored in a fitted location. Users could then use the Alpine IVA-W505 7" screen to control and navigate with the unit. Since the Alpine PMD-B200 has built-in Bluetooth, you could use the Bluetooth technology through the IVA-W505 controls!
So with the Alpine PMD-B200, users could integrate GPS navigation and Bluetooth technology into the double DIN receiver and enjoy full functions of the Black Bird II.

Summary
The Alpine IVA-W505 is a very nice in-dash multimedia receiver with a lot of rare and unique high-tech features. The graphic user interface is both high-quality and modern, and is thoroughly enhanced by the clarity and vivid colors of the large 7" screen. It is compatible with a plethora of media file formats and optional additional components like HD Radio or Satellite Radio. Its audio features will surely impress any audio enthusiasts and could definitely be categorized as an audiophile product.

The one thing we find lacking in the IVA-W505 is a built-in navigation. It seem as if they have everything multimedia-related featured in the unit, but missed a key factor in today's mobile electronics market: the demand for GPS navigation functionality. It's also relatively expensive at around $1000, and that's before GPS navigation or any other additional purchases for optional accessories such as XM or Sirius Satellite Radio tuners or Bluetooth module.

If you're willing to cough up the cash, you will be rewarded with a great audio/video receiver at a premium audiophile-grade level-- there's no doubt about that. Just don't expect this unit to be a cheap investment because you'll need additional accessories to keep up with the latest technology and services.

Audio Features
This double DIN receiver features a few audio enhancement technologies that is sure to please any audiophile out there. We've already mentioned its 5.1 Dolby Digital capability with an optical digital output. In addition to that, the Alpine IVA-W505 features a high-pass filter that channels all high-frequency sounds to the appropriate tweeter or speaker, allowing your subwoofer or low-frequency capable speaker to properly produce low-frequency sounds without any high-frequency signals interference.
There are also 5 equalizer bands that users could adjust, including bass width, bass center, and subwoofer level adjustments. The double DIN headunit even features a high 24-Bit D/A converter that ensures optimal audio quality from various media files that you play through the unit. Since CDs, DVDs, and media files are digital mediums, the D/A converter converts the digital data to analog data that eventually becomes what you hear and see. A 24-Bit D/A converter is considered excellent in the car audio world, especially when compared to standard 1, 6, 8, or 12-Bit converters.

Let's not forget its 50 watts max per channel power output, 3 pairs of preamp outputs set at 2 volts, providing RCA outputs for front, rear, and subwoofer channels; and its optional ability to use the KTX-H100 Imprint tuner.
With the Alpine IVA-W505's Imprint Sound Manager, the system will analyze various listening locations from each seat and will determine the best setting for the vehicle. Since each vehicle is different acoustically, this Alpine innovation will greatly improve sound reproduction quality.

Alpine has competed well with Pioneer and Kenwood in the car audio industry, especially with in dash receivers. Coming soon to retailers summer 2008 is another one of Alpine’s arsenal in the receiver battle, the IVA-W505 double DIN receiver.

Display
First look of the Alpine IVA-W505 reveals a very stylish display that is both clear and full of color depth. The graphical user interface looks very modern and gives a high-tech feel to the unit. The Alpine IVA-W505 features a large 7" that is designed with motorized mechanisms that will allow it to adjust viewing angle according to user presets and controls. The screen is about the biggest any in-dash multimedia receiver could ever feature and certainly sets it apart from most other in-dash receivers.
Viewing anything on this 7" screen will definitely be enjoyable as it offers crystal clear contrasting display, perfect for movies or just simple media display. It even features a versatile S-Video input which could be used for laptop, portable media devices, or even some video game consoles.
Compatiblity/Integration
What the Alpine IVA-W505 does best is integration of many of today's popularly used technology. An obvious demographic to target are iPod users. As of April of 2007, there were over 100 million iPods sold since its first release. The IVA-W505 is designed for maximum compatibility with iPod audio and video playback. This means that all of your iPod-stored media files could be played in this unit seamlessly.

The IVA-W505 will display all media information such as artist, albums, etc. and even the accompanying album art. You have the choice of either connecting your iPod to the USB connection or a an optional direct iPod connection. You could even connect two iPods simultaneously! Don't have an iPod? Don't worry! Through its USB port and any loaded discs, users could play DVD, DVD±R/RW, VCD, CD, CD-R/RW with MP3, AAC, and WMA support.

With additional accessories, the Alpine IVA-W505 is capable of receiving Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio sources as well as HD Radio and Bluetooth Hands-free technology. The IVA-W505 is capable (with additional accessories) of hands-free calling, with call status and caller ID display as well as phonebook synchronization. The unit also features a very rare optical digital audio output with Dolby Digital encoding that could be used with the optional PXA-H701 Multimedia Manager module, allowing for complete 5.1 surround sound playback.

Info about the tagged songs are stored and transferred to your iPod. Later, connect your iPod into your computer, iTunes will automatically present the tagged songs in a new Tagged playlist giving you the option to preview, buy, and download the songs.

Pioneer has always been producing the highest of quality for their customers. They have earned themselves a respectable and trustworthy name. Any product that has that pioneer logo will live up to its expectations.

Pioneer’s AVH-P6000DVD it another one of their quality in-dash receivers with a lot of options. To start off, this unit is a double DIN receiver. Good thing too. How else are you going to have the room for a built-in 6 disc changer? In addition to the disc changer, the double DIN also provides space for a 7” widescreen LCD display. The 7” widescreen renders this unit perfect for watching your favorite DVD’s. The built in disc changer will hold and play both CDs (including CD-R and CD-RW) and DVDs (including DVD±R/RW), as well as DivX, AAC, MP3, and WMA. A lot of playback options and show pioneers attention to details. For convenience, the AVH-P6000DVD includes ID3 tagging.

The Pioneer AVH-P6000DVD has a motorized screen that scrolls down to expose the CD/DVD slot. Keeping this behind the display provides a cleaner and smoother look, while also providing room for a bigger screen. The touch screen itself is very bright and vibrant. Perfect for watching a movie or enjoying the many display options of the AVH-P6000DVD. Whether you have the clock displayed or the real-time vehicle performance data, the touch screen will always display bright and clear. The AVH-P6000DVD has options to display a wide variety of options such as acceleration, speed, RPM, horsepower, etc. A rear view camera can also be connected to display when the car is placed into reverse. A safety feature that is quite helpful.

With the correct adapter, the AVH-P6000DVD will support a direct iPod connection. When connected in this manner, the user can control the iPod by way of the touch screen. Once again, another small detail that makes a big difference for those iPod users. Satellite Radio and Bluetooth capability are other options that provide the user even more options in how to use the AVH-P6000DVD to their personal needs.

Pioneer Audio has really come through with this Double DIN receiver. It meets the needs of pretty much everyone because it does pretty much everything. If the features of the AVH-P6000DVD don’t grab your attention, the looks of it will. It’s a simple design, but it looks good. In the end, you can not really go wrong with the AVH-P6000DVD.

Alpine has always been a trusted company when it has come to car audio. They have constantly and consistently produced quality units for the needs of the people. The newer in-dashes from Alpine are no different. The Alpine iDA-X100 and the iDA-x200 continue the Alpine legacy of superior products.

Both the Alpine iDA-X100 and the Alpine iDA-X200 are fully iPod compatible and house a USB/full speed direct connection made specifically for the iPod. They allow full access to the iPod from the in-dash and Alpine has made it easy for the user to navigate and search through the iPod. The iPod connection is becoming more and more popular among in-dash units and Alpine has really done it right. Along with being iPod ready, the Alpine iDA-X100 and Alpine iDA-X200 come ready for all of the following: Bluetooth, SIRIUS or XM radio, HD radio, and CD changer. These in-dashes are ready to do just about anything.

The Alpine iDA-X100 and the iDA-X200 are very similar digital media receivers and they only have a few differences between them. The first and major difference is the 2.2” full color display on the Alpine iDA-X100. The Alpine iDA-X200 has a 2.2”, two line LCD display that offers 2 colors. Obviously the Alpine iDA-X100 is going to look a lot better and more vibrant (as well as come with a bigger price tag). The really nice thing about the 2.2” full color display of the Alpine iDA-X100 is that when the iPod is connected it will show the album art of what is playing in a format that is strikingly similar to that of the newer iPods.

Another difference between the two is the power outputs. The Alpine iDA-X100 produces 50W x 4 on its built in amplifier, while the Alpine iDA-X200 turns out 45W x 4 on its amp. While it is not a huge difference, some might need that little bit of extra power. Other differences include the use of i-Personalize on the Alpine iDA-X100. I-Personalize is Alpines unique way to download and upload images to the in-dash. On the Alpine iDA-X100 it allows the user to place a wallpaper of there choice on the display to personalize and make their in-dash receiver uniquely theirs.

Of all the notable differences, the major variation is the full color display verses the two line display. That’s why the Alpine iDA-X100 is about a hundred more dollars than the Alpine iDA-X200. Of course that is the suggested retail for the Alpine iDA-X100 and the Alpine iDA-X200 is $400.00 and $300.00 respectively. If you are lucky then you might be able to find them cheaper somewhere. Some stores have somehow lowered their prices on the Alpine iDA-X200 to the low $200’s. It seems as though the Alpine iDA-X100 is sticking around the $400 range though.

After reviewing the details on both the Alpine iDA-X100 and the Alpine iDA-X200, it is clear that Alpine is still putting quality and excellence into the production of each and every one of their products. No one can make a wrong choice when choosing between either of these to in-dash receivers.

Pioneer AVH-P4000DVD Review

For some of us, there comes a time when the factory in-dash simply doesn’t cut it anymore. We then turn to the plethora of after market in-dash units. However, some of us feel limited because we need to find a double DIN in-dash unit. It is a little harder to find then, but they are still out there. For those that know of that pain and have been through it, come to appreciate a well built, quality double DIN head unit. For those that might be approaching this decision should look into the Pioneer AVH-P4000DVD. For the amount of features that this name brand unit has, the price is a bargain.

To begin, the Pioneer AVH-P4000 DVD provides a great solution to all the space that a double DIN offers with a 6.1” widescreen display. Of course, the screen is a touchscreen as that is becoming a standard on this category of units. The screen itself has an anti-glare coating on it, thus making it ideal for having in a car when driving in the sun happens often. The entire face also has intelligent dimmer controls, which will maintain the brightness of the display all day long as well as all night long

So what exactly can this unit do? Well, for starters it can play all of the following: DVD±R/RW, DivX, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, WMA, MP3, and AAC. If you have audio or video on a disc, the Pioneer AVH-P4000DVD will probably be able to play it. Of course there are always exceptions to everything, but just about every audio or video file can be played. The Pioneer AVH-P4000DVD also comes ready with many ways to expand. It is ready for each of the following: SIRIUS or XM satellite radio, HD radio, Bluetooth, iPod, and controls for a CD-changer. The only set back here is the lack of a navigation unit. However, Pioneer does offer another unit similar to the AVH-P4000DVD that has navigation. The drawback to that is that it costs about two hundred more dollars, depending where it is bought from of course. So if navigation is not a priority and the cost is, then the AVH-P4000DVD is still looking like a great unit.

The AVH-4000DVD can also be programmed to display the video for a rear view camera. No one really knows just how nice this feature is until they have used a rear view camera themselves. Prevent accidents and mistakes with a visual image of your blind spots when backing up.

There are only a few drawbacks to the Pioneer AVH-4000DVD. It doesn’t have the biggest display on the market; however it is second only to the Pioneer AVH-P6000DVD. The AVH-P6000DVD upgrades the 6.1” screen to a 7” screen. The AVH-P4000DVD also lacks a built-in 6 DVD changer, which the upgraded model come with. So the Pioneer AVH-P6000DVD has a few more extras, but it also runs about three hundred and fifty more dollars. So when the price is considered, the Pioneer AVH-P4000DVD is an excellent choice to go in the double DIN space.

Another great release expected in late first quarter of 2008 by JVC is the versatile KD-AV7100. It's a multimedia receiver with a retractable 7" wide touch-screen LCD display. The monitor slides nicely into the single DIN chassis and provides the screen with protection and an unseen security measure. It essentially utilize the idea of "out of sight, out of mind", avoiding notice from any scavenging thief on the streets.

This great single DIN receiver is also capable of playing a wide range of media formats from the rare VCD, DivX, and MPEG1/2, to the more popular MP3 and WMA. Of course, it is also capable of typical DVD, DVD±R/RW, CD-R/RW playback. In addition, the KD-AV7100 has 5.1 Dolby Digital and Pro Logic capable audio output, giving the unit a significant advantage over most other similar single DIN flip-out multimedia receiver. It could put out four channels surround plus center channel and a subwoofer sound, enabling users to enjoy a 5.1 surround sound home theater in the vehicle! What's even better is JVC's high-voltage gold-plated RCA inputs and outputs, which significantly reduces signal loss and maintains high-fidelity sound quality for better media enjoyment.

What makes this unit great is its capability to retrieve and play media from its front SD Card, USB, and 3.5mm auxiliary inputs. The inputs are even hidden behind a sliding plastic cover, giving it a very sleek look without gaping holes and slots littering the front panel. If you have an iPod, you could use its built-in iPod connection to play music and control your iPod from the receiver. Want Satellite Radio or HD Radio? Not a problem! Jensen VM9312 / DUAL XDVD8181 Reviews

Jensen and DUAL have both been recognized as some of the most affordable electronics brands available in the mobile electronics industry. It's especially difficult then when two brands like these release two identical products that are also priced similarly. Hopefully this review will help you decide on which in-dash touchscreen receivers you want by identifying some of the features most important to you.

Jensen VM9312

Let's start with the Jensen VM9312. The unit is a single DIN size receiver with a motorized, flip-out screen. The screen itself is quite large, showing off a 7" touchscreen that tucks away quite nicely into the single DIN receiver. It looks like a standard CD player when the screen is retracted, protecting the unit from coveting eyes and possible break-ins.The head unit plays virtually every possible file format and mediums out there. It plays all types of DVDs and CDs, as well as MP3, WMA, VCD, AVI, MPEG1, MPEG2, and even JPEG files. The VM9312 is iPod Ready as well as Satellite (XM or Sirius) Radio Ready, giving this unit great expandability options for users looking for extra features.

Another great aspect of the VM9312 is the included auxiliary input adapter that could be mounted virtually anywhere in your vehicle. It allows for audio, video, 3.5mm, and optional iPod link auxiliary connections that is easy to get to and definitely convenient to use.

As I had mentioned before, the two units are very identical. The XDVD8181 also features a 7" touchsreen. It even retracts the same way that the VM9312 does, but there are quite a few key differences. First off, the DUAL XDVD8181 will not be able to play as many file formats as the Jensen. This may not be a big deal if you don't use AVI, MPEG, or VCD, for those who do, it may leave them with disappointment.

An excellent feature of the XDVD8181 is its ability to expand as a navigation unit. DUAL offers the XNAV9525 as an optional solution for those looking to turn this head unit into a GPS navigation system. This will allow users to utilize the 7" screen as a navigation guide as well as multimedia playback display such as watching movies and of course, listening to music.
It also features standard 50 watts maximum power output per channel, something a little bit better than the Jensen VM9312; however, the DUAL XDVD8181 lacks the ability to function as an iPod Ready or Satellite Ready receiver. However the unit still features a 3.5mm auxiliary input adapter that is included in the box and just like the VM9312, it could be placed anywhere in your vehicle; and whereas the VM9312 lacked a subwoofer output, the XDVD8181 comes equipped with 2 pairs of preamp RCA outputs as well as an additional mono subwoofer output. This addition to DUAL car audio line of products is definitely worth looking into.

Overall
It's ultimately up to you as a consumer to decide on which is best for you. You may not need all the features available on one but may want some of the key features on the other. Nonetheless, both of these units are available at a low cost. You can't go wrong in purchasing in-dash receivers with 7" LCD monitors for less than $300.

Jensen VM9022 Review

The demand for double DIN receivers is greater than ever. More and more cars have larger, double DIN receiver mounts, allowing for greater multimedia potential. Consumers are now given the opportunity to have an LCD screen as large as 7" installed within their dashboard.

Many of these receivers with built-in LCD screens are not affordable for most consumers and typically, only the biggest fans of the car audio industry would be willing to spend the money to get them. Pioneer, Kenwood, and JVC are marketing these units anywhere from $800 to over $1000. Enter the Jensen VM9022 at an affordable $500, an affordable double DIN receiver with a 6.5" LCD monitor.

Pros
The first good thing about this unit is the affordable price. It's significantly less than most major brands, and it's still packed with features. It has built-in Bluetooth wireless technology, allowing users to safely and conveniently drive-and-talk on the cell phone.

Let's not forget that it plays DVD, VCD, and DivX video media format as well as AAC (iTunes), Mp3, and WMA music file formats. Don't worry, you could also play files from the built-in SD card slot that it has on its front panel. If your file formats support 5.1 surround sound, the unit is capable of handling Dolby Digital and Pro Logic II surround sound. In addition, the Jensen VM9022 is iPod ready and satellite radio ready, and even navigation ready with additional accessories. There are also lots of options for expansion including USB and additional audio and video RCA inputs.You will find that the large screen is nice for any occasion and integrates quite nicely to any dashboard. For the price of the unit, this double DIN head unit is packed with features that would otherwise go for hundreds of dollars more, setting this receiver superior with its "best-bang-for-the-buck" value.

Cons
Unfortunately, the unit does not support user selectable button illumination colors. You'll be stuck with blue, which is great if it matches your car's interior-otherwise, you'll just have to live with it.

The remote looks like it's from a 1989 television set. It's large and bulky and has a quite outdated style. Another thing worth noting is the USB port. Though yes it's definitely a great plus that the unit features it, the access to the port may be quite difficult since it is a rear input connection. The cable isn't very long, so you will not be able to extend it further than your front seat armrests.

Overview
This double DIN unit is definitely worth the price. It's packed with features and is much more affordable than the more popular brands. It is truly a hidden treasure in the mobile entertainment industry.

2008 JVC Arsenal Series Review

Introduction
In February of 2008, JVC released an entire line of brand new Arsenal Series in-dash head units. First available on the market February 9, 2008, these Arsenal Series receivers set the new standard of what is to be the new generation of mobile audio and video entertainment.

The market could no longer settle for a typical CD player with AM/FM capabilities because technology is advancing incredibly fast. To answer the demand for high tech integrations, JVC released their car stereo systems that are equipped to fit the needs of modern day consumers.

Pros
JVC Arsenal head units are designed for specific needs. The great thing about the Arsenal series is the fact that JVC does not try to cram every feature into one unit. This is good for many reasons. First, it tends to reduce cost on a specific unit versus a unit that does everything. Second, you can be sure that product quality on Arsenal receivers are not compromised like a feature-crammed unit made by a no-name brand.

Let me give you an example. Perhaps you have already bought a GPS navigation that mounts on your dash or your windshield, great. Now you want a 7" in-dash monitor but you obviously do not need the extra navigation feature. For this reason exists the KW-ADV790, a double-DIN in-dash LCD monitor with built-in DVD player. It costs about 300 dollars less than a similar unit that has built-in navigation features in it. It also features a touchscreen and rear view camera input that makes this unit both versatile and simple to its purpose. Sit back, relax, and watch a movie by the beach with the entire KW-ADV790.

Arsenal single DIN receivers generally look the same but each are tailored for specific features. The KD-ABT22 features built-in Bluetooth connectivity that will allow users to wirelessly stream audio into the unit or receive phone calls. It also features a rear USB port that will allow users to play MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV, iPod, and even WMA with DRM. Similarly, KD-APD89 features everything but the Bluetooth connection.

If you're looking for a simple HD Radio tuner, the KD-AHD39 is the solution for you. It is simply a CD player capable of receiving HD Radio signals. No other fancy features, no confusing buttons. It plays just like a regular AM/FM CD player and comes equipped with a front 3.5mm auxiliary input.

For all of you iPod lovers out there, the KD-APD58 and the KD-APD49 are two head units that could be your answer to iPod integration for your vehicle. It has built-in connection to any iPod equipped with docking port. You could control and view song titles on your in-dash receiver so you won't have to navigate and scroll through your songs on your iPod while driving. The only difference between the two is the additional preamp output and AAC playback capability of the KD-APD58.



Last but not least is the KD-ADV49, also known as "the Kameleon". It features a sleek knob-less design that is brandished in shiny black glassy finish. It also features a 3.5" LCD display and is capable of playing DVD, DivX, Mpeg 1/2, AAC, MP3, WMA, and WAV. It has three sets of preamp outputs, giving you the ability to wire this source unit into an additional amplifier. It also has a rear USB port and could control and operate your iPod. Let's not forget the new proximity sensor that JVC showcases on this model. It knows when you are approaching the front of the screen so that a menu is ready when you want it and hides when you are away. Did I mention that the entire front panel disappears when you turn it off? It's literally a chameleon, blending into your dash when it's idle or turned off.

Keep in mind that all 2008 JVC Arsenal head units are (if they are not already mentioned) Satellite Radio ready, HD Radio ready, iPod ready, and Bluetooth ready, as well as equipped with a 3.5mm front panel input. This gives you a wide option to choose from, should you choose to expand your system at a later time. Additionally, WAV, MP3, WMA, and DivX playback are also standardized to any capable receiver.

Cons
Other than the KD-ADV49 and the KW-ADV790, the Arsenal single DIN receivers does not look anything out of the ordinary cosmetically speaking. It seems that JVC needs to push ahead into the new age of mobile entertainment and start designing front panels like Kamaleon. And unfortunately, they all have dot-matrix type displays and has no significant edge over other brands when it comes to front panel displays.

Another thing to notch a negative point on is the remote design. It's rather bulky and also old-fashioned in design. Not exactly credit card size, but it could clip on to your key chain if you don't mind it being a little unwieldy.

Conclusion
If only one word could be said describing the Arsenal Series head units, it must be "integration". JVC has made great efforts for their product to supply the demand of new technology by integrating increasingly used technology such as HD Radio and Satellite Radio, as well as iPods into their units.

It is definitely a series characterized by advancing technology and giving consumers the ability to expand their system with just one source unit. It is a great buy if you don't mind the standard CD player front panel design on most of the single DIN head units. So enjoy your movies and your digital music.
